Welcome to 2B!

What a beautiful day for a Field Trip!!!
Wow - We could not have asked for a better day (we needed to drink lots of water and have breaks in the shade or air-conditioned exhibits), but our Calgary weather was good to us! We got to see some incredible animals and insects at the zoo! There was no shortage of things to see and do and each group was very busy exploring, learning and looking for items for a scavenger hunt! It was a great way to wrap up our Insect unit in science (the zoo expert we with worked with was impressed with all of our knowledge!), but also to spend the end of our school year together! Big thanks to our parent volunteers: Heath's Mom, Luke's Mom, Jacob and Sebastian's, Sarah's Mom, Amy's Mom and Link's Mom |
It has been so nice having our ten little
friends in our classroom. We have seen them progress through their lifecycles and this Friday we released them into our Hawkwood community environment! Keep your eyes open for them! |
We have a very talented class!! Thank you to all those who shared their talents and all those family members who came to celebrate with us! |

Some guiding questions...
What are the different stages of a bee's lifecycle? How long does each stage last? What is happening during each stage of their lifecycle? Why is the process of a lifecycle so important to bees? How is the bee's lifecycle similar or different to the insects that we are studying? What are some additional interesting facts about a bee's lifecycle? (we learned a lot of fun facts) |
We took some time to take a different look into the lifecycle of a bee by documenting their lifecycle in words and key facts and also with some food!
|
Our 10 friends are eating, growing and exploring!
We have been documenting our observations of how they are changing in our visual journals and cannot wait to see what they will look like and what stage of their lifecycle they will be in once we return from the long weekend! What to do you think? Will they still be in the caterpillar stage of their life cycle? or Will they have turned into chrysalises? Stay tuned entomologists... |
Exploring 3D Solids
I can... "Describe and compare 3D objects" including • cones •spheres • cylinders •pyramids •cubes • retangular prisms Guiding questions.... how many faces does my object have? how many edges does my shape have? how many vertices does my shape have? does my shape roll? does it stack? does it slide? |
What is happening in our classroom...
Over the past two years, we have LOVED reading Andrea Beaty's books "Iggy Peck, Architect, Rosie Revere, Engineer and Ada Twist, Scientist", so we decided to write to her! And guess what? She wrote back! We were so excited that a New York Times best selling author wrote to us!! See the email to the left of her response to our writing.
Remember to read, read, read! |
Calling all math detectives...We were given a mystery to solve! A beloved groundhog went missing and we were asked to find him. We needed to put our math skills to the test to solve a series of 5 clues to and narrow down the suspect list to capture whoever kidnapped the groundhog. Just in time for Groundhogs Day! |
What's your word....
I can identify personal behaviours that show a readiness to learn...
I can recognize that it takes time and effort to accomplish goals....
I can recognize and respect that individuals have similar and different interests, strengths and skills...
I can recognize and value strengths and talents that members bring to group....
To start off the year 2019, our class took time to reflect on goals that we have looking forward. We talked about how we all have our own strengths and areas where we wish to improve. The Grade Twos took time to pick one word that was their goal word for the rest of Grade Two!
I can... Show my understanding of numbers in the tens place
I can... Show my understanding of numbers in the ones place
I can... Add two digit numbers to find a sum
I can... Show my understanding of regrouping of addition equations
2B has been exploring various ways to find the sum of addition equations. Students have learned how to stack equations:
25
+36
-----
And add horizontally
25 + 36 =
Ask your child which way they prefer and get them to show you some math equations with and without regrouping!

Fort Calgary Field Trip
We had a fantastic field trip on November 6th to Fort Calgary. It was the first visit to Fort Calgary for many of us! We were super lucky and had the place to ourselves! We started off our day with Mountie Training - Yes Sergeant! We got to test out our acting abilities (we have some future actors and actresses in our classroom) and performed a play for the adults on our Field Trip. Our play was about a train ride that took place in the Prairies in the past when Mounties, First Nations, and Settlers were settling on the Prairies. We even got to dress up! We then got to explore Fort Calgary by doing a Scavenger Hunt. There were lots of amazing artifacts for us to learn about. In the afternoon we got to map out a Prairie Community from when the First Nations Peoples were first there, up until present day. Our Expert at Fort Calgary, Dannika, let us explore even more artifacts that were found on the Prairies in the past. We had a wonderful time on our field trip at Fort Calgary. If you are looking for a fun day out as a family - Fort Calgary is a great place to visit! |

Math Games!
We were very excited to show off our learning of PLACE VALUE in Math to another teacher at Hawkwood School, Mrs. Harms!
We reviewed our learning of tens and ones, by playing a math place value version of "I Have, Who Has?".
Then our class got to play a new game that is a place value BINGO game and we LOVED it! We started off with 2-digit numbers and many of us were excited to challenge ourselves to 3-digit numbers! It is another reminder for us that math is not only fun - but it is EVERYWHERE!

September 19, 2018
Constable Wil Johnson came into our learning commons to talk to our class about how we can BOUNCE! We brainstormed some amazing qualities that we possess (kindness, respectful, caring, honesty, etc.) and all the people in our lives that support us (parents, siblings, teachers, coaches, police offices, etc.) and how when those two things come together (ME+Help) we can BOUNCE and soar to great places!
Magnet Mazes!
Students were given a challenge to design their own Magnet Maze to show their learning of using magnets to attract and repel objects and to see how magnets are all around us!
